Hey there,

My name is Casey Slaught.

I build web-based geospatial applications.

I am passionate about building tools that help people make better decisions about ecosystems and natural resources.

👋 Intro

Hello, and thanks for visiting my personal website! I made this site to showcase the things I am interested in (both tech-related and otherwise) and hopefully serve as a reference for others who feel their path towards software development is weird or non-conventional.

As a software engineer, I'm interested in building intuitive geospatial tools on the web. I know from experience that aerial imagery and spatial data can be hugely beneficial, but many of the current tools out there are too complicated for non-technical users. I want to change that.

Software is a means to an end, and for much of my career the cause that I thought most in need attention was the ongoing pressures faced by conservationists and the wildlife they protect. I still do, but I also think that geospatial technology and has a big role to play in our transition towards more sustainable energy and food systems. I hope to be a part of this transformation.

Here are some of the technologies I regularly use: Python, PyTorch, JavaScript, TypeScript, Next.js, React, GDAL, Mapbox, AWS

  • Designed real-time LoRa alert system for communities to report potential rebel incursions
  • Created cloud-based spatial data integration system to track ranger patrols and park vehicles
  • Developed Google Earth Engine project to monitor deforestation and agricultural encroachment
  • Designed and managed project to extend Ubiquiti long-range VLAN to 6 remote ranger posts
  • Established drone surveillance program by training 25 rangers in French

🏗️ Projects

Smart Carte

Web application that makes preparing cloud-free Sentinel-2 imagery and land cover classifications simple for non-technical users. Select a study area and date, then view or download an analysis-ready image. Uses semantic segmentation models to perform cloud detection and land cover classification. Run on AWS Fargate for highly scalable tasks.

SimpleDroneMaps

Currently working on an aerial imagery management tool to help drone operators and researchers host orthomosaics, satellite imagery, and 3D models and share them easily with clients or colleagues. Visualization of very large assets is performed through map tiling and CDN setup with AWS S3 and CloudFront.

Virunga LoRa Alert System

System that helps communities around Virunga National Park report sightings of dangerous rebel groups in real-time through LoRa alert buttons connected to a security dashboard and SMS service. Designed network infrastructure, configured LoRa devices and server, and built interface for viewing network of devices.
